No one has ever been surprised by the statement that Lady Gaga has a penchant for being over-the-top, but even she can be practical. The Nov. 24 release of Gaga’s “The Fame Monster” EP is available in multiple editions; the “Deluxe” version not only comes with the nine new tracks tacked on to the original “Fame” album, it also includes a pair of 3-D glasses and a lock of hair from her wig. Gaga has stated in prior interviews that she isn’t in favor of repackaging material to sell to fans over and over, so to avoid ripping off early buyers, she is also selling the extra tunes in a standalone EP, and that’s more value than you can shake a disco stick at.
Over the past year, Gaga has made a painstaking effort to demonstrate her creativity, drive and stylistic range. “The Fame Monster” definitely serves as a tribute to her ambition with a Euro-soul inspired lead track, “Bad Romance,” two homages to ABBA with “Alejandro” and “Speechless” and a handful of numbers reminiscent of classic Madonna and David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust phase. The EP is capped off by a cameo appearance by BeyoncΓΒ© in “Telephone” and sassy R&B song, “Teeth.”
Though it only consists of eight tracks, “The Fame Monster” has something to offer everyone, party-goers and soul-lovers alike. At first, I was a little creeped out by listening to Lady Gaga sing, “He ate my heart and then he ate my brain,” in “Monster,” but was ultimately won over by the no-frills vocal talent displayed in “Speechless.” The only catch to Gaga’s songs is that they’re loved so quickly and played so often that they’re doomed to always fall short of classic status. So while I know it’s a matter of months until I tire of the EP, it’ll be on repeat until her next album comes out.
