Ingredients:
(not from scratch)
1 tube of sugar cookie dough
1 Tbsp of bacon drippings
1/4 cup of maple syrup
5 strips of crispy bacon (crumbled)
1 cup flour
(from scratch)
1 1/2 c. butter
1/4 c. crisco
1 Tbsp. bacon drippings
1/2 c. powdered sugar
3/4 c. brown sugar
1 Tbsp. vanilla extract
1/3 c. maple syrup
1 Tbsp. molasses
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp salt
1 lb. bacon, fried crispy and crumbled
3 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
Instructions:
(not from scratch)
Start frying up the bacon. Squeeze the tube of cookie dough into a big bowl. Use your hands to soften the dough and make it easier to add ingredients to. Finish frying up the bacon. Make sure it’s extra crispy to make crumbling easier. Remove the bacon strips from the pan and let them cool. Add the bacon drippings and maple syrup and mix in with a spoon. Crumble the bacon and then add to taste, mixing with a spoon. Finally add the flour to make the texture appropriate. Bake according to directions on dough package.
(from scratch)
Cream together everything but the bacon, flour, and baking powder, then gradually stir in the dry ingredients. Put globs the size of ping pong balls on baking pan. Bake 14-16 minutes, 350 degrees. Makes 4-5 dozen.
Review:
No, those aren’t chocolate chips you’re looking at … those are bacon bits!
While I was putting the bacon crumbles into the dough, it seemed completely backwards, but the fresh-from-the-oven cookies exceeded expectations. The result was not as disastrous as I was afraid it would be, but it was strange.
The maple syrup taste was actually pretty good with the sugar cookie dough, and the bacon bits just added salty surprises. Whether or not you find them pleasant is entirely up to your taste buds.
The saltiness of the meat matched the taste of the maple syrup, like all those times I accidently doused my bacon in with that sticky goodness… with a little cookie taste in there, too.
Some people on staff really enjoyed the combination of tastes and were pleasantly surprised. They rated it a four out of five.
Frankly, I am not sure I would ever give them that, but to each his own.
If you are adventurous, I would recommend trying bacon sugar cookies, but it is a bit risky. I heard both ‘these are fantastic!’ and ‘those are disgusting!’ reactions.
