Tips for Moving Day

It’s time for moving day! Whether you live on-campus or off, many students are moving home or to a new place in the next few weeks. Though the task can be daunting, here are a few tips to make the move a bit easier:

* Try to move out gradually, if possible, or at least in more than one day. A couple of weeks before I moved out of Kiewit, my dad had a meeting in Omaha and was able to take all of the stuff I knew I could survive without for two weeks or so. Though most people don’t have this luxury, maybe try to find someone to store it for you off-campus for a while so that you have less to do when you actually move out. Things like decorations, rugs, winter clothes and shoes are all good to pack early.

* Offer to help others. If you help your friends and neighbors move some of their stuff, they’ll probably help you.

* If you have any friends or future roommates who live in Omaha, ask nicely if you can store a few things in their basement. It’s especially helpful if these things can include futons, refrigerators, etc.

* Wrap breakable items in T-shirts. This will keep them from breaking and provide extra storage for clothing.

* Throw away things you know you won’t need next year. Will the notes from applied math really help you next year? If so, take them home. If not, recycle!

Good luck and happy moving!
