Creighton Women Win to Remain Undefeated

The Creighton women’s soccer team defeated UMKC 2-0 Thursday night to improve to 2-0-0 on the season.Β  The Jays were led by junior goalkeeper Katie Jo Swanson, who played all 90 minutes and shutout the Kangaroos.

Creighton came out firing early, taking 2 shots on goal in the first ten minutes of the game.Β  The Jays finally converted in the 33rd minute when junior forward Brittany Neumann scored her first goal of the season.Β  Neumann scored off the assist from sophomore forward Lauren Cingoranelli. Five minutes later, senior midfielder Erin Gunther scored her first goal of the season to give the Jays a 2-0 lead.

Creighton continued to control the game throughout the second half, but could not convert any of their goal opportunities.

β€œWe need to clean up our play in the attacking third and the goals will come.Β  I really liked our effort tonight,” head coach Bruce Erickson said.

Even though the Jays couldn’t strike again in the second half, Erickson had plenty to be pleased about.Β  The team outshot the Kangaroos 14-6, with a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal.Β  The Jays also controlled the ball for the majority of the game and beat UMKC for the third straight time.

“We had a very positive performance tonight,” Erickson said.Β  “The win was highlighted by two very good goals and a shutout.”

Erickson and the Jays will look to build off this performance as they continue their season.Β  The team will play their home opener against Oklahoma State next Friday September 2.Β  Kickoff is 7:00 PM at Morrison Stadium.
