The Creighton womenβs soccer team continued their up and down season by splitting a pair of games at home this weekend. The Jays defeated Boise State 2-0 Sunday afternoon and lost 2-1 to Northern Colorado on Friday night. The teamβs record now sits at 4-4.
The Jays beat Boise State thanks to a great game from junior forward Brittany Neumann, who scored two goals. Creighton struggled to get going at the beginning of the game, and went into the half in a scoreless tie. But the Jays wasted no time in the second half, getting on the board in the 57th minute when Neumann scored her first goal. Neumann scored again in the 73rd minute of an excellent pass from senior defender Erin Gunther. The Jays dominated the second half and finished the game with a 16-8 advantage in shots.
“I thought we played well today,” said head coach Bruce Erickson. “We’ve been struggling putting the ball in the net, but Brittney [Neumann] getting two goals relieves a little pressure but it gets her on track for the season. I thought we created four or five other really good chances to score today.”
The Jays struck first on Friday night, but could not hold on to beat Northern Colorado. Neumann scored in the 11th minute of the game to give the Jays a 1-0 lead, but the Jays were stonewalled the rest of the way by Bearsβ goalie Kirstin Salminen. The team was outshot 7-6 by the Bears in the slow-paced game.
Even though the Jays lost a game over the weekend, Coach Erickson remains optimistic the team can bounce back.
“Overall on the weekend, granted it was a 1-1 finish, we still had two performances where we were the better team and I thought dominated in both and hopefully this pushes us into the Northern Iowa week with a little more confidence and gets us ready for the conference opener.”
Creighton opens conference play next Friday and hosts Northern Iowa. Kick-off is 7:00 PM at Morrison Stadium.
