Jays fall to Jayhawks in overtime

The Creighton Bluejays suffered their first loss of their last six games on Oct. 9 against the University of Kansas Jayhawks 2-1 in overtime.

Kansas took an early lead at only 2:39 into the first half with a goal by Jaime Fletcher, with the assist from Shannon Renner. The half ended 1-0.

During the second half, both teams struggled to score, and with less than five minutes left in the half, Creighton’s opportunity to tie the game was quickly fading away until senior forward Beth Fyles scored a clutch goal to send the game into overtime with only 4:23 left in the second half. The goal was her first of the season, and the assist came from senior defender Erin Gunther.

The clutch goal was not enough, however, to win the game as Kansas’ Ingrid Vidal scored with 6:34 left in overtime to lead Kansas to a 2-1 victory.

β€œWe were fatigued,” coach Bruce Erickson said.

Regardless, Erickson said the Bluejays will be ready for their Oct. 22 matchup against Missouri State University at Morrison Stadium.
