IRHG works to improve campus dining

In continued service to the on-campus population, Creighton University’s Inter Residence Hall Government would like to clarify several pieces of factual information that were misrepresented and omitted in the Creightonian’s Oct. 28, 2011, article β€œDining decisions: Becker will keep the

same hours.”

The legislation to close Becker Dining Hall for breakfast was not passed due to concerns brought up by students in the halls as represented through their IRHG hall executives.

While the majority of student representatives objected to closing Becker for breakfast, this does not mean that IRHG is β€œleaving the issue of congestion unresolved” as stated in the column.

Since the legislation went to a vote and failed in the IRHG General Assembly, IRHG has been working closely with both the Department of Residence Life and University Dining Services to make other adjustments across campus in an effort to alleviate the congestion in Brandeis

Dining Hall.

Adjustments now in effect include the revival of popular dining options such as all-day breakfast at Davis Diner and taco salads at Java Jay.

The proven popularity of these options are expected to draw in students, which should help ease some of the stress on Brandeis.

Additionally, advertising will be utilized to help explain how and where meal exchange can be used so that students are more aware of the variety of dining options on campus.

The congestion in Brandeis is being closely monitored, specifically on weekends, when overcrowding has been the greatest.

The current projection is that the novelty of Brandeis’ remodel may taper off and the crowds for dinner may dissipate naturally, especially with the new and expanded options offered elsewhere on campus.

If further changes are needed to dining hall hours, IRHG will create additionalΒ  recommendations in the coming months and welcomes student input.

Ultimately, the issue of dining hall congestion is multi-faceted, and it cannot be resolved by solely addressing the dining hours of one dining location.

IRHG General Assembly meetings, where issues like campus dining are addressed, are held on Tuesday at 9 p.m. in Hixson-Lied Science Building G-04Β  and are open to all Creighton students, faculty and staff.

Additionally, meeting minutes and other information about IRHG are available at the IRHG website, http://www.creighton.edu/irhg/.
