It’s a wrap for women’s soccer

The Creighton Bluejays’ season came to an end on Oct. 30th as the women’s soccer team lost its first playoff game against the University of Northern Iowa in what proved to be an offensive struggle for both teams.

The Jays started off strong with Creighton senior midfielder Beth Fyles taking the first shot of the game 11 minutes in. The offense continued to dominate as the Bluejays outshot the Panthers 6-4 in the first half. Both teams headed into the locker room scoreless.

The second half proved to be the same as the first. Both UNI and Creighton continued to get shots off only to be stopped by the solid goalies on each team.

At 90 minutes the still-scoreless game was sent into overtime and eventually into double overtime.

In both the overtime and double overtime both teams continued their struggle to score a goal. The Jays dominated overtime, outshooting Northern Iowa 5-0.

After the conclusion of double overtime and both teams failing to score the winner of the match was determined in a shootout.

In the best of five shootout, UNI scored each time, with Creighton only recording three goals from senior defender Erin Gunther, junior midfielder Gaby Guillen and junior forward Brittney Neumann.UNI went on to win in the shootout 5-3.

The Creighton Bluejays ended the season with a 9-6-3 overall record.

The team will graduate nine seniors this year. In the past four years Creighton has had the best record for women’s soccer in Creighton history.
