Students enjoy recess

Late Night Recess, CU After Dark’s first program of the semester, took place last Friday night. The event included many different activities to entertain all different types of students. There was a Zumba marathon that was full for four hours, a three-point contest against members of the women’s basketball team, sumo wrestling, jousting, and a series of ‘Minute to Win It’ games based off the game show.

“I think it [was] a great program,” nursing freshman Eden Sell said.  “On a snowy night, it’s a great thing to go to.”

Many of the games evoked a competitive edge in players.

“We designed [the minute to win it games] to look easy but they are actually difficult to master,” Jason Gant, assistant director of intramural sports, said.

Many of the players found this to be the case, being very close to winning when the clock ran out. This kept many contestants coming back with the urge to finally pull it off.

Contestants earned tickets for attempting the games and received a bonus for winning. With the tickets they won, contestants could put their tickets in a raffle for several prizes, including gift cards to movie theaters and restaurants around town valued at $100, gift baskets and a Creighton basketball jersey. Players could also redeem their tickets for candy or t-shirts.

“The event is meant to be a fun alternative to alcohol,” Gant said. “That is what we are looking for with CU After Dark, every so often mixing it up and doing something new and fresh.”

The atmosphere at the event seemed to reflect these intentions with many students staying at the event for a while, trying out the games multiple times.

“It was a lot more fun than I thought it would be,” business junior Jason Nguyen said. “It reminds me of freshman year when brought the freshman class together.”

“The event was a success,” Gant said. “Hundreds of students came out and had a great time. We are hoping to have this event again next year.”

CU After Dark has several more programs in the works for this semester. They include a trip to CoCo Keys Water Resort in Omaha, a trip to see the movie “The Hunger Games” and a CU After Dark “blowout” at the end of the semester.
