Jays continue streak

After their spectacular victory against the University of Evansville, Creighton University’s softball team continued to reign supreme on their home field as they defeated Drake University in Tuesday’s game.

In the first inning, sophomore outfielder Ellen Homan scored a home run to center field to give the Jays an early lead. Freshman utility Allie Mathewson managed to advance to third base on a wild pitch and was able to score on a hit from sophomore outfielder Blair Lowe. Sophomore pitcher Becca Changstrom struck out swinging to end the inning.

β€œWe always try to get that early lead because we always play better when we get that lead,” Homan said. β€œBut we need to keep scoring more often.”

Drake managed to tie up the game in the second inning when Lindsey Vande Wall and Jaimie Duffek scored after a hit from Nicole Randall. The second inning ended with Amy Pierce striking out looking.

The game came to a stand still as neither team managed to score any runs in the next three innings. At the end of Creighton’s sixth inning,Β  Lowe managed to score after a hit from freshman infielder Liz Dike. Afterwards, Dike was able to make her way from third base to home on a passed ball.

β€œShe got the passed ball, and the catcher wasn’t there,” Dike said. β€œSo I just dove, and I loved diving head first.”

Later in the inning, Homan singled to third base and Mathewson managed to score a home run to right field giving the Jays two more runs. The game ended with the Jays winning 6-2.

β€œWe gotta be more aggressive than the last time we played,” head coach Brent Vigness said. β€œIt’s the most important game on our schedule because it is the next game on our schedule. So we want to go play hard, we want to be more aggressive with the plate.”

The Jays return again to CU Sports Complex on Wednesday to host their game against Nebraska. The game starts at 6 p.m.
