NFL Draft

The NFL draft began April 3 in New York City with the firstΒ round and, as expected, the Indianapolis Colts selected Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with their first overall pick.

Luck will be expected to start immediately for the Colts as they try to improve on their 2-14 record as well as try to replace one of the franchise’s greatest quarterbacks of all time, Peyton Manning. A daunting task for some, Luck knows that it will take hard work but is up for the challenge.

“You don’t really replace a guy like that,” Luck said. “You can’t. You just try to do the best you can. Obviously, he was my hero growing up.”

There was little surprise in the Colts’ pick as they announced earlier this week that they would select Luck first overall. The same was true of the Washington Redskins, who also announced earlier this week that they would select Baylor quarterback and Heisman trophy winner Robert Griffin III.

The Redskins originally were not going to pick secondΒ but traded picks with the St. Louis Rams in order to secure Griffin as their quarterback of the future.

Moving up to take players was a reoccurring theme in the firstΒ round, as the Cleveland Browns traded picks with the Minnesota Vikings to move to #3 to select Alabama running back Trent Richardson, and Richardson appreciated the sentiment.

“This team really wants me,” Richardson said. “They ain’t going to let me slip out of their hands at all.”

The Vikings then selected OT Matt Kalil out of USC with the #4 pick, and Jacksonville traded with Tampa Bay to move up to #5 so they could select WR Justin Blackmon from Oklahoma State.

To round out the top 10 the Dallas Cowboys traded up to #6 to get LSU CB Morris Claiborne, Tampa Bay took Alabama S Mark Barron at 7, Miami took Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill with the #8 pick, LB Luke Kuechly was selected by Carolina with the ninthΒ pick and The Buffalo Bills took CB Stephone Gilmore from South Carolina with the tenthΒ overall pick.
