Women’s golf continues theme of success

The Creighton Women’s golf team tied for seventh-place at the Creighton Golf Classic at Oak Hills Country Club.

Fourteen schools total competed in the two-day tournament, and the play was neck-in-neck. The University of Northern Iowa snagged the title with a score of 635, but Southern Illinois finished only one stroke behind them.

The chatter in the club house was all about a hole-in-one that was scored by Kristi Tschudin of Western Illinois University. It was her first-ever hole in one. She had used her five iron on a par three hole that was 165 yards long. Although the sophomore did not place in the top 10, she tied for 20th place.

β€œThe hole in one felt great and I am so glad I was able to get my first hole in one at a tournament that is filled with such great competitors and teams,” Tschudin said.

Amy Anderson of North Dakota won her third Creighton Classic individual championship with a score of 149.

Celeste Gassman was Creighton’s leader and earned her fifth, top-ten finish of the season by tying for eighthΒ place by shooting a 160.

β€œIt was hard weather conditions and yet the team still got top half,” Gassman said.

Creighton junior Jill Stuckenschneider tied for 26th place by shooting a 170. At the end of the first day of play, she had also been tied for 26th place.

Freshman Rachel Thompson who had been tied for 30th after the first day of play, tied for 49th with a 178.

Katie Morel had one more stroke than her first day in the tournament and shot a 181 total, brining her to tie for 56th place and fellow freshman Mary Cathryn Rau ended up just being one shot behind which placed her in a tie for 62nd.

Competing as an individual, sophomore Emily Allison also tied for 56th by shooting a 181.

The Jays played well for such a tough course. They pared 74 times and had four birdies in the tournament. With all of the teams in the tournament combined there were 454 double bogeys and 1171 bogeys.

Many of the schools come to this tournament every year because they have girls from the Omaha area on their teams.

The 14 schools that participated in the tournament were University of Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, South Dakota State University, North Dakota State, SIU Edwardsville, Western Illinois University, Drake University, Creighton University, University of Nebraska-Omaha, Concordia-St. Paul, University of South Dakota, University of North Dakota, Upper Iowa University and Rockhurst University.

β€œWe really enjoy being invited every year, because it really improves our game,” Rockhust stand-in coach Arielle Byrnes said. β€œI don’t think that we slow the pace of play, and it helps us improve. We are really thankful that Creighton invites us every year.”

The action for the Bluejays will be in Terre Haute, Ind. when the team competes in the State Farm MVC Women’s Golf Championship April 22-24.
