Students invited to cut footloose

Practice your pirouettes, strap on your dancing shoes and be ready to move. For a discounted price of $15, Creighton University students can attend β€œLet’s Dance,” a one time dance workshop hosted by Omaha Creative Institute and Ballet Nebraska in the Alley Poyner Macchietto Space at 1516 Cuming.

β€œThe great thing about this class is that truly anyone can attend, no experience required. Dancing is such a fun way to get exercise and let loose,” said Becky Haworth, a recent Creighton University graduate and current marketing director for Omaha Creative Institute.

β€œ[The class] will be more creative movement than dance. It’s really like basic technique and basic movements from different types of dance,” executive director of OmahaΒ Creative Institute Susan Thomas said.

Thomas also said the class will be geared more towards modern dance because of itsΒ broad meaning and ease to learn.

The event offers new opportunitiesΒ for community members to work with an established, professional dancer, Natasha Grimm. Grimm is the primary dancer in Ballet Nebraska and has experience both in dance performance and teaching people of all skill levels and dance backgrounds.

While the event offers community members the unique chance to work with the only professional dance company in Nebraska, it also presents students with the opportunity to dabble in dance with the onetime only class. Moreover, it is unique for Omaha Creative Institute to offer a dance class of this nature to help students expand their creative horizons.

β€œWe’ve featured everything from beginningΒ ukulele to cartooning, but the closest we had come to teaching dance was an improvisational movement class a few years ago,” Thomas said.

β€œThere really is something for everyone, so we encourage students to take our workshops,” Haworth said. β€œThey’re a great break from the stress of college life, and the perfect opportunity to meet new people.”

The two-hour class is Saturday at 10 a.m. Students can register for the class at www. omahacreativeinstitute.org and claim their $20 student discount with the code β€œdance_with_ oci.” Registration will be open until Friday at 11:59 p.m.

β€œI took dance classes, and it’s pricey for students especially. Something like this doesn’t have expensive supply. We’re happy to do this,” Thomas said. β€œCreighton students are so close by; we love to have them involved.”

Haworth has been working to promoteΒ β€œLet’s Dance” in order to introduce the community to dance, something about which she is personally passionate.

β€œNaturally, I was thrilled to hear we are hosting a dance workshop. The more people who are exposed to dance, the better,” Haworth said.

This dance event is a precursor to Ballet Nebraska’s β€œMomentum” which will be at the Joslyn Art Museum Oct. 19-21. β€œMomentum” is a dance show featuring a vast range of music styles to back up original, modern choreography. Later in the season, students can look forward to a traditional rendition of the winter classic β€œThe Nutcracker”, and β€œAlice in Wonderland” even later in the spring.
