This past Monday, Justice Without Borders held the first ever Worker’s Appreciation Pie Day in lower St. Johns, inviting students and Creighton University’s staff to chat over a piece of pie.
A more casual follow-up to the Worker’s Appreciation Banquet held last spring, Monday’s Pie Day was a success. In hope to strengthen student-worker relations as well as pose tribute to the many workers that keep this university running, Justice Without Borders (JWB) co-chairs Arts & Sciences senior Lindsey Johnson and freshman Haley Warren alongside treasurer Business freshman Sarah Rubbelke are looking to continue this fall tradition.
“One of our main goals of this semester, and year, is to build relationships with the workers on campus,” Warren said. “Yes this should be done in everyday conversations, such as a friendly hello to Brandeis workers, but it is also helpful to bring in more students by having an event that everyone is welcome to. We hope to do something like this in the future fall semesters.”
Officially a student organization on campus only this semester, Justice Without Borders is an up-and-coming group committed to worker relations and fair labor conditions on and off campus. Thanks to Creighton Student Union’s financial contributions, this small organization is capable of holding events such as this.
“Our group’s goal in this pie event is to show that our need for [the workers] is really great and that without them nobody on campus would be able to get anything done without their support,” said Arts & Sciences sophomore and JWB member Mary Hanten. “Overall, we want to promote a larger sense of community that isn’t limited to those that are here for academic reasons.”
So, when the ladies at Java Jay smile and call you “baby,” smile back. When John’s flipping your omelet at Becker, strike up a conversation. It’s the little things.
“We are so blessed to have such wonderful workers and I think a lot of times we as a student body, faculty and staff so not let the workers know how much they are appreciated,” Warren said. “Events such as pie day are a chance for CU to show its workers some appreciation.”
