Fujan makes the right plays

Creighton Women’s basketball junior guard Mckenzie Fujan does not consider herself to be a selfish player.

β€œI am a β€œwhatever the team needs me to be” kind of player,” Fujan said.

Due to her will to win and unselfish attitude, she brings big contributions to the team on the defensive end of the floor.

Fujan is an important player on the Bluejays roster. She not only uses her strength and athletic ability to rebound and defend the ball, but she can also get to the rim off the bounce on the offensive end.

Her teammates would also agree.

β€œMckenzie is an aggressive, hardworking and competitive player,” junior center Alyssa Kamphaus said.

It is always good to have a player that scores baskets and makes flashy plays. But when you have a player that is willing to make the hustle plays, rebound and play hard on defense, the team always has a better chance of winning.

Before Creighton, Fujan attended Bishop Neumann High School, where she averaged 13.5 points and 3.1 assists. As a senior, she averaged 14 points, 5.0 assists and 3.5 steals. Fujan led her team to back-to-back state tournaments titles.

She was also named First Team All-state two years in a row and β€œFremont Tribune” Female Athlete of the Year as a senior.

As a freshman at Creighton, Fujan got some playing time off of the bench, averaging 2.6 points per game. As a sophomore, Fujan averaged 19.6 minutes per game and 4.8 points per game.

β€œI think I bring a certain competitiveness to every practice and game,” Fujan said. β€œLosing is not my strong suit and I think that rubs off on my teammates so they want to win as badly as I do.”

Her competitive edge and will to win has rubbed off on her teammates, as the Bluejays are 8-2 in conference play. Now in her junior season, Fujan has been playing well as a starter, averaging 9.1 points and 3.3 rebounds per game in conference play.

As the Bluejays finish out the season, Fujan wants to keep cutting down on turnovers and increasing rebounds. And her teammates expect her to continue to make big contributions to the team.

β€œI see her bringing what she always brings to the court,” junior guard Jordan Garrison said. β€œGreat leadership, contributions and just doing whatever it takes game by game to win.”
