Jays fall to un-ranked Sycamores

The No. 13 (coaches) and 16 (AP) men’s basketball team fell to the un-ranked Indiana State University Sycamores Wednesday. After a 13-point victory over the Sycamores at the CenturyLink Center in early January, the Jays were defeated 76-57 in Terre Haute, Ind.

The Sycamores came out ready to play, jumping out to a 13-8 lead early in the first half. Creighton responded to tie up the score with a lay-up by sophomore center Will Artino and a 3-pointer by junior forward Doug McDermott. Creighton field goals and ISU free throws kept the game competitive midway through the first half.

A 7-0 scoring run by the Sycamores brought the score to 26-18 with 5:00 minutes to go in the first half. Thirteen team fouls and eight turnovers by the Jays resulted in 23 points for the home team, with CU trailing 35-24 at intermission.

β€œWe had foolish turnovers,” head coach Greg McDermott said. β€œAnd then some that were forced because Indiana State made great plays.”

A four-point play by Sycamore R.J. Mahurin in the first minute set the tone for the second half. Senior guard Grant Gibbs, along with McDermott and Artino, kept the Jays alive until multiple ISU 3-point field goals led to a 51-31 lead for the Sycamores. Two free throws by Artino brought the deficit to 18, the closest the Jays would come to victory for the remainder of the game.

β€œCongrats to Indiana State,” Greg Coach McDermott said. β€œThey were by far the superior team tonight.”

Artino tied his career-high and led the Jays with 13 points, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor. Freshman guard Nevin Johnson, senior center Gregory Echenique, Gibbs and McDermott each contributed eight. Echenique led the Jays in rebounds with seven. Creighton shot 42 percent from the floor, scoring 22 points below its game average.

The win moved ISU into a second place tie in the MVC. Creighton remains first in The Valley with a 9-3 record, 20-4 overall.

The Jays return home on Saturday for a 9:05 p.m. match-up against the Illinois State University Redbirds.
