Emergency Medical Services (EMS) club is a group of dedicated students who are interested in or have a yearning passion for the emergency field. Students learn more about emergency situations while attending the
bi-weekly meetings and are able to connect with other students with the same passion. The club hears from speakers, tours fire stations and hospital ERs, learns and refreshes skills and prepares material for campus educationand discussion.
So far this semester the group has had the opportunity to learn the Heimlich maneuver, visit a fire station and have a Creighton medical student share her experience with Creighton EMS. Students in the club also had the chance to learn the details about helicopter EMS from a flight medic.
βItβs extremely important to know the complete truth about certain aspects and fields of health care,β said EMS club president Drew Schramm.
Jessica Hansen, vice president of EMS, feels that the club is important because it connects students in a major that is not widely known. She also feels it is important to be able to inform others of emergency scenarios.
βFor students who are unsure about what EMS is or what being an EMS major involves, upperclassmen having already completed or are currently enrolled in the paramedic program can serve as mentors,β Hansen said. βIt is also important because it strives to increase awareness of how to handle emergency situations for everyday students and faculty of the university.β
One may discover a new passion or realize that EMS is what he or she really would like to major in. Β Β Β
βWhen I first came to Creighton, I hadnβt planned on being an EMS major, so it was my way to stay connected to one of my favorite hobbies,β Hansen said. βFrom being in the club I have actually switched my major to EMS. From being in EMS club, I have learned that I will always have a support system while facing the challenges of the paramedic program. The club has shown me that there are other people who love EMS just as much, and even more than I do and that we are all in this together.β
βMedicine is always changing, as must we by learning continuously,β Schramm said.
Anyone interested in joining the club or learning more about EMS can contact Schramm or Hansen or attend one of the meetings on Tuesday at 5 pm.
