Stay warm in style this winter

Even though many Creighton students were expecting the first snow on Monday, few were ready for the ensuing drastic cold

weather change.

It goes without saying that with new weather, comes a new wardrobe. It is often tempting to simply throw on the nearest clean sweatshirt and pair of jeans and call it an outfit.Β  I’m here to tell you that there is a simple and efficient method to dressing for winter weather while managing to be comfortable during classes. Here are a few suggestions for looking like a put-together and professional university student, as well as staying warm and healthy during these chilly winter months.

The first concept for a cold weather outfit is layering. This doesn’t mean putting on a T-shirts underneath your winter jacket. This type of layering means investing in smart thermal pieces that can be worn in conjunction with your current winter clothes. Uniqlo is a well-known Japanese brand famous for incorporating thermal heat technology called Heattech into their clothing designs. Although they don’t have a store location here in Omaha, they do have a website where you can order some useful and stylish winter clothing.

The next component to the cold weather outfit is the cold weather accessory. Winter accessories, such as scarves, gloves and hats, are extremely important β€” even for guys. Hats are an accessory that a lot of students seem to forget about, but they are one of the most important for protecting the head and ears from cold and wind. An essential part of these accessories is the fabric. Wools and fleece are the best insulating materials to keep out the cold and to maintain the warmth surrounding the body. During your free time, in between homework and studying, check out Target or JCPenney sales for these important additions to your wardrobe. You will be happy you did when you are walking across campus in wind and snow.

Boots are a must for winter and a current trend for this year is an all-in-one function and fashion boot. All of the major fashion destinations, including Nordstrom, Macy’s and Von Maur, are reinforcing this fashion-forward look. SOREL is a rising brand that makes waterproof, faux-fur and traction boots, made specifically to keep people warm and on trend. These boots are a great value for money because they prevent you from slipping on ice, and they keep a significant area of your body insulated. Because good quality boots can last for several winters to come, they are a crucial investment for a university student.

Freezing temperatures can deter us from spending much time outside. During times of stress, thermal technology for layering, quality cold-weather accessories and uncompromising footwear can keep you focused on more important things: showing up to class, making sure to get assignments done and enjoying the upcoming holidays with friends and family.Β  Next time you are getting dressed, leave the old sweatshirt in the closet; keep in mind those simple techniques listed above that will surely keep you warm from head to toe.Β  Don’t forget to incorporate some Creighton blue and white in your winter wardrobe!
