Thanksgiving break is quickly approaching, and most Creighton students are undoubtedly hoping it would come a lot sooner. We all need that time away from our studies to relax and spend time with loved ones. Whether you are going back home to visit your family and pets, or spending Thanksgiving with friends, you are most likely thinking about what to pack or just wear the day of, as well as being on the lookout for the perfect Thanksgiving outfit.
Some families love to spend Thanksgiving at home lounging on the couch, watching the football games and taking a long nap after the big meal. It does not take much thought to dress for this casual family occasion. In this case, it is best to stick to any stretchy bottoms with no buttons, and oversized sweatshirts with the logo of your favorite team.
However, there are families who make Thanksgiving a fancier occasion, perhaps inviting more of the extended family you havenβt seen for a long time, or if you are joining someone elseβs family for the holiday you might like to dress to impress.
Although it is very tempting to go out and spend a lot of money on a unique outfit, chances are you can either put together an outfit you already have in your closet or you can manage your budget with these three easy tips:
1. Follow the Thanksgiving dinner color- code. When digging through your closet topack your suitcase or out at the mall looking for a bargain, try to find clothes with the typical autumn colors. You can remember them by associating them with a part of the Thanksgiving dinner: burgundy for cranberries, brown for perfectly oven-roasted turkey, ivory for mashed potatoes and orange for pumpkin pie. These colors are great for the Thanksgiving dinner, not only because they match the autumn mood, but also because they all complement each other wonderfully and can be worn throughout the fall.
2. Stick to loose clothing. Most of us cannot help but enjoy the bountiful dinner and snacks and desserts on Thanksgiving. If we are honest with ourselves, we have come to realize and accept that we will not be dieting on Thanksgiving and should plan our outfit accordingly. Stretchy denim, dresses, skirts, leggings and even exercise attire are key when packing for the holiday. My recommendation to you all: it might be a good idea to do a jog before the big meal!
3. Keep in mind stain-friendly materials. I remember a time playing with my younger cousin at Thanksgiving dinner one year when all of a sudden, like a slow motion scene, a cup of coffee spilled on my white shirt. I will never forget that holiday dinner, and I look at it as a lesson learned. So, if you do get a stain, take care of it right away or at least bring a sweater to cover your shirt in case it gets messy at the table. If you are wearing cashmere or wool, be extra cautious when reaching over the table for the salt and pepper, because those materials are hard to remove butter and gravy stains from. If all else fails, remember to pack your tide-to-go or other pre-treat stain removers!
With these tips, I hope you will have a stress- free time packing your suitcase for Thanksgiving break and finding the perfect Thanksgiving dinner outfit. After all, Thanksgiving is a time for relaxing and enjoying a well-deserved break. Keep this in mind while trekking through the tests, papers, and projects due next week. And in the spirit of Thanksgiving, donβt forget to be thankful for all the great people, opportunities and happiness in your life.
