These days, it seems easier to hate Greeks than love them.
News articles seem to be filled with stories about another Greek organization scandal. Between rape incidents and racial slurs, there has been little room for any good news involving Greeks.
While these organizations did horrific things, it is not fair to say that all Greek organizations are like them. In fact, it is more the opposite. Society needs to stop judging all Greek organizations based off a few bad apples, and instead look at all the good they have done.
Greek life is about giving back to the community, creating lasting friendships, learning to be a leader and making yourself better. Unfortunately, the public eye sees it as something different. Society stereotypes Greeks as a bunch of rich kids who party and feel they are above everyone else. They do not see the good that Greek life is doing.
Creighton University should be proud of its Greek organizations. They help out in so many ways and are involved in all areas of campus life and different activities. They help support St. Jude Childrenβs Hospital, literacy, womenβs heart health and many more charities and causes. In 2013-14 they did 15,000 hours of direct service and helped raised over $62,000. They go on fall and spring service trips, along with weekly service sites. These members come from all walks of life. Members should be proud to wear their letters and say they are part of Creightonβs Greek life.
Unfortunately, it is not seen this way. People often want to know more about the negative things they think really happen. I am a proud member of a sorority here on campus. When I tell people that I am a sorority girl, the first questions are often βdo you haze?β and βwhy?β The questions I wish would get asked are βwhat is it like?β or βwhat are your favorite parts?β Instead, people want to assume the worst. We need to change this stigma and show the community how great Greek life truly is and all the good it does for the community.
One of the ways to do this is being proud to be a Greek and letting people know all of the good you are doing with your chapter. When people insist on talking bad about Greeks, bring up the facts or bombard social media with positive posts about how much you love Greek life. Do not get mad, but rather show others they cannot judge all Greek organizations on the bad choices of one or two chapters.
Non-Greek life individuals are just as important, or in some cases even more important, in helping end the stereotyping of Greek life. One way is to stop saying all Greeks are a certain type and get to know people in Greek life if you do not already.
Itβs important for the non-Greeks on campus to let the Greeks know you are supporting them. Do not spread rumors or contribute to the false ideas about Greek life. With more than 30 percent of the undergraduate population in Greek life, chances are one of your friends is involved.
Creighton University students need to take action in helping promote positive information about Greek life. While the popular culture may be thinking it is cool to hate Greeks, we need to change that. We need to show its great being a Greek.
