Add thrills to your Halloween playlist

I’m sure most people reading this are either hosting or attending a Halloween party. These are some tracks I’d play without hesitation at a party of my own. These tracks do vary significantly on the creepy scale, so I have partitioned them accordingly.

Tier I: Feel-good jams with a spooky twist

1. Flying Lotus β€” β€œReady Err Not”

β€œReady Err Not” combines interesting sound effects and a very dance-able bass-line to create a creeped-out, eerie vibe.

2. Kanye West β€” β€œMonster”

Sample-heavy production, multiple big name features (Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Justin Vernon) and braggadocious lyrics … yep, it’s a quintessential Kanye song. With a Halloween-esque twist, of course.

3. Talking Heads β€” β€œPsycho Killer”

β€œPsycho Killer” is one of the greatest singles released by one of the most influential and important American bands.

4. Eurythmics β€” β€œSweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”

Your Halloween party needs more classic 80s synths.

5. Michael Jackson β€” β€œThriller”

β€œThriller” is a pretty obvious choice, so this is your reminder to queue it up on Spotify come Saturday.

Tier II: Getting creepier

1. Frank Zappa β€” β€œThe Torture Never Stops”

β€œThe Torture Never Stops” beautifully showcases Zappa’s experimental approach to songwriting, singing and playing.

2. Marilyn Manson Ββ€” β€œThis is Halloween”

You should certainly recognize this tune from Tim Burton’s β€œNightmare Before Christmas” and/or the brilliant Creighton dance rendition of it last year (β€œA Nightmare’s Holiday”). The Marilyn Manson cover is predictably creepier.

3. Swans β€” β€œLunacy”

β€œLunacy’s” ominous vocals crescendo into yells while distorted guitars create a twisted beauty. This song will almost certainly give you chills during its six-minute runtime.

4. Slint β€” β€œNosferatu Man”

On β€œNosferatu Man,” the second cut of their seminal album β€œSpiderland,” frontman Brian McMahan sings of vampires and abandoned castles over the band’s chilling instrumentation.

5. Primal Scream β€” β€œInner Flight”

Experimental electronic pioneers combine the psychedelic and scary.

Tier III: The inner circle of scary

1. Burial β€” β€œKindred”

U.K. producer Burial utilizes his trademark soul-sampling and oddball percussion to create a truly scary track.

2. Darkspace β€” β€œDark 3.16”

The Swiss band Darkspace combines ambient and black metal, two of my favorite genres. β€œDark 3.16” is like a horror movie set to music.

3. Cannibal Corpse β€” β€œHammer Smashed Face”

Although β€œHammer Smashed Face” is one of Cannibal Corpse’s most famous tracks, it’s not for the faint of heart.

4. Pink Floyd β€” β€œCareful With ThatΒ Axe Eugene”

The legendary U.K. musicians flaunt their truly weird side with β€œCareful With That Axe Eugene.” The neighbors will get chills even if you don’t.

5. Pharmakon β€” β€œBody Betrays Itself”

Featuring truly terrifying vocals, noisy sound effects and droning bass, β€œBody Betrays Itself” will certainly scare you. It’s probably the scariest song I’ll hear in years.
