Creighton men’s basketball has six players score in double digits in victory over UTSA

The men’s basketball team led wire-to-wire as it improved to 2-0 with a 103-78 win over UTSA at CenturyLink Center Omaha on Tuesday night.

Junior guard Isaiah Zierden led the way for the Jays with a career-high 24 points. He was one of six Bluejays to score in double digits.

β€œThrough the two regular season games and the scrimmage we’ve had five guys in double figures each game — six tonight,” coach Greg McDermott said. β€œWe’re getting contributions from different places and I think that’s who we need to be.”

Junior forward Cole Huff poured in 17 points and senior guard James Milliken added 12. Sophomore forward Toby Hegner, junior forward Zach Hanson and junior guard Maurice Watson Jr. added 10 points each.

Hegner led the Jays in rebounds, grabbing seven in the game. Junior guard Malik Albert dished out 10 assists.

Zierden, who has missed time in each of the past two seasons because of knee injuries, added four assists, three rebounds and three steals in the Jays’ win.

β€œI don’t take any little thing for granted now,” Zierden said. β€œI want to play every game like it’s my last, every possession like that could be the last possession I ever play, so I want people to remember it as a good one.”

The Jays forced 18 turnovers and shot 54.7 percent from the field, compared to 44.8 percent from the Roadrunners. The Jays went into the locker room at halftime leading 61-37, but a tougher second half had the team only outscore the Roadrunners by one point.

The 61 points in the first half tied a CenturyLink Center record.

The Jays won’t have a lot of rest before one of the team’s toughest tests of the season. On Thursday, the Jays will meet the Indiana Hoosiers in the Gavitt Tipoff Games in Bloomington, Indiana.Β

The Hoosiers, ranked No. 14 in the nation, will also come into the game at 2-0. The team owns wins over Eastern Illinois and Austin Peay. Last season, the Hoosiers lost to former Bluejay MVC rival Wichita State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at CenturyLink Center Omaha.

β€œThis is why you play college basketball,” Huff said. β€œThis is why you come to Creighton. You get up for games like this. We have a big test, going into a hostile environment against a top 25 team. Our first two games, we have to put them behind us.”

Creighton and Indiana will meet at 6 p.m. The game can be viewed on the Big Ten Network.Β
