Kiewit Fitness Center allows students to gain employment opportunities

Creighton University offers its students an opportunity to seek experience with on-campus jobs that pertain to human activity and exercise. The Kiewit Fitness Center provides on-campus jobs for students from freshman to senior year.Β

Some of the student employees enjoy the interaction that they experience on the job. Building supervisor and Arts and Sciences junior Heather Urquhart loves spending time with her coworkers. Urquhart values the relationship with her coworkers so much that she never wants to disappoint them. She said she wants to provide the best service possible for individuals that use this facility. Β

Also, some student employees enjoy the interaction of the various people that use this gym. Sophomore desk worker Ben Ryan enjoys building relationships with people who come in regularly. He likes communicating with people about their goals and progresses throughout the semester. With this relationship, he believes that his job becomes β€œa lot more rewarding.”

A major benefit that some students appreciate is the opportunity to make money during the school year. Β

“Working at the KFC gave me a steady income as a student,” Arts and Sciences junior Henry Mishek said.Β

As a desk worker, Mishek said he also seized opportunities to find time to do homework during his shifts. It made work more doable because he didn’t have to give up as much study time throughout the day.Β

Although there are some positives to working at the gym, some people struggle with some of its shifts.Β

β€œThe most difficult part about working at the KFC is opening and closing shifts.” Arts and Sciences senior Saif Shah said. Β

He said that the opening shifts start at 5:45 a.m. and closing shifts end at midnight. Both of these shifts can be exhausting for some students, especially when students have to focus on school-work.Β

Another struggle that some KFC student employees said they face is upholding some of the KFC’s policies. Ryan mentioned that the most frustrating policy is turning people down when they do not have a Creighton ID with them. Ryan hates it when he has to send people away, especially when he knows them, because a lot of people β€œclear out time in their schedule to workout and sending them back to get their ID is hard.” Β

Working at the KFC has positively impacted some students’ college experience. Urquhart gracefully explained that this experience has helped her become a better leader. It has also influenced her to be more active in her community.Β

Also, some students said they have learned to how to mange time better. Ryan said he has to coordinate his study and work schedule each week so he can perform well in both areas. He believes that this experience will benefit him greatly for his future.
