A couple of weeks ago, British singer/songwriter and actor David Bowie announced his 25th studio album, βBlackstar.β In response to this wonderful news, I compiled a list of some of my favorite Bowie tracks, primarily from the first 20 years of his career. Whether this is your introduction to the legendary musician or you grew up with Bowie, I hope you enjoy this list.
7. βGolden Yearsβ
To kick off this list, I choose Bowieβs 1975 single βGolden Years.β This track was the first single released from the epic βStation to Stationβ album and demonstrated a noticeable stylistic shift. Here, Bowie leaves his classic rock style behind and embraces disco and funk. βGolden Yearsβ also showcases Bowieβs incredible vocal range.
6. βRebel Rebelβ
βRebel Rebelβ stands as one of the greatest glam-rock tracks of all time and a fan favorite among Bowie songs. It features a now-iconic distorted guitar riff, an obnoxiously catchy vocal melody and a completely groovy bassline. βRebel Rebelβ found its way into numerous films and TV shows and still receives a lot of radio play. Even though youβve probably heard this song several times before, you should revisit it when venturing into Bowieβs career.
5. βFashionβ
The 1980s saw a much more electronic-heavy output from David Bowie. This transition from rock to electronic is exemplified by the 1980 single βFashion.β On βFashion,β electric guitars still play a starring role, but synthesizers and sound effects emerge prominently from the background. The song has a mostly funky feel to it, but there are some distinct, darker industrial undertones.
4. βChangesβ
You probably recognize this classic song if youβve seen βShrek 2β or ever listened to the radio. βChangesβ is Bowieβs smash hit piano ballad and one of his most famous tracks. Itβs an incredible tour de force from the rockstar, but goes easy on the βrockβ part.
3. βHeroesβ
Bowie teamed up with musician Brian Eno to create one of the most gripping and ethereal tracks of the 1980s. βHeroesβ highlights the smoother sound Bowie found circa 1977. The instrumentation backs up another amazing singing display that builds into almost yelling.
2. βSpace Oddityβ
Even before his incredible run in the 70s, David Bowie made huge waves in the music world. βSpace Oddityβ was his big break, earning him both commercial success and critical acclaim. The song generates chills throughout. Itβs one of the most remarkable feats of songwriting of the 1960s and proved to be hugely influential for decades to come. In 2013, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield covered βSpace Oddityβ β¦ in space. Howβs that for famous?
1. βLife on Mars?β
I actually had a fairly easy time picking my favorite Bowie track. βLife on Mars?β, the second cut from βHunky Dory,β has always stood out to me. Itβs one of my favorite tracks ever. The songwriting is incredible, I love the piano and backing string ensemble and of course, Bowieβs singing is on point.Β
