A local Benson sandwich shop, Star Deli, has found a new home at 343 N. 24th Street near Creighton University. The restaurant’s chef and owner, Jay Muller, opened the deli on Sept. 26 with a party to commemorate the grand debut. 

This is the second location for Star Deli in Omaha.  Its original location is on 6114 Military Avenue in Benson, which also doubles as an art gallery. 

The Star Deli is a casual sandwich shop offering a variety of creative and traditional toasted sandwiches, salads and soups. 

The quick walk from campus has made many Creighton students consider it a valid option for lunch instead of going to the dining halls. 

“The food [is] warm, delicious and filling, reasonably priced and great for a barely-off-campus dining choice,” College of Arts and Science junior Adrienne Pyle said. 

The menu offers sandwiches on your choice of a French baguette, Italian hoagie, flat bread, or a whole wheat wrap. Also offered are fresh salad and soups made daily. 

“It’s nice to have so many options at Star Deli,” College of Arts and Sciences sophomore Monica Williams said. “You don’t get that much variety at the dining halls, so going here for lunch is a nice change of pace.”

In addition to the pleasant ambiance, the food is fresh and filling. Williams’ favorite sandwich is the Turkey Pesto, given the deli smokes its own turkey in house.

Additionally, the diverse menu has a fusion of flavors. With a mix of American, Italian, Greek and Middle Eastern food favorites, each sandwich encompasses multiple layers of taste. 

And of course, no restaurant would be totally complete without its desserts.

“The best part about Star Deli is not the location but the ice cream,” Williams said. “They have pints of Ted and Wally’s on hand.”

The location has proved to be one of the main incentives in attendance for hungry students, given 24th Street’s newest addition is only a stone’s throw from the mall.

“I think it’s great that there is a restaurant so close to campus,” College of Arts and Sciences sophomore Jack Pitsor said. “It gives students the option to mix things up. 

“Not only is Star Deli a great food alternative, but it also has great hours,” Pitsor added. “I like that it stays open late. If I need a midnight snack while studying, I can always get one at Star Deli.”

The deli’s late and long hours have made it a popular student destination for a speedy lunch or a quick midnight snack. The restaurant is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to midnight and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. The deli is closed Sunday.

A second location for Star Deli, paired with an art gallery in the Benson area in its original location, recently opened on the corner of 24th and Chicago, featuring an array of sandwiches and salads on its menu. The deli is about a two-minute walk from campus and remains open until midnight on weekdays, making it a popular hot spot for hungry Creighton students. The new installation replaced what was formerly The Corner Creperie and has generally been welcomed by the Creighton student population.
