Creighcella spotlights local Omaha bands

Bands from the local Omaha area came to Creighton last Friday for the first β€œCreighcella.” Bands played on the Kiewit Fitness Center lawn from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event was organized by the Inter Residence Hall Government (IRHG).

Zach Wulbert and Maren Haddad, the Executive Director of Community Outreach and the Executive Director of On-Campus Programming for IRHG, respectively, were the main students involved planning Creighcella.Β

Wulbert said that they began planning last March for the program to take place near the end of the 2015-16 school year. He said IRHG β€œwanted to provide a campus-wide event for residents and other students that gave them a taste of the amazing music scene that Omaha offers.”

Four bands were lined up to perform, but the event was canceled because of weather.Β

Not wanting to give up on the opportunity for local bands to perform, IRHG rescheduled the concert.

Β Some people may remember that it was planned to take place during Welcome Week, as β€œa great back-to-school concert,” Wulbert said.Β

Unfortunately, again, the weather was uncooperative and the event postponed.Β

The event was finally held on a sunny September day β€” the perfect weather for an outdoor concert. The performers included Topher Booth of the band Nation, State Disco, Orenda Fink and Twinsmith β€”most of which are originally from the Omaha area.Β

β€œWe unfortunately lost one of our original bands due to an availability conflict, but were able to replace them with an equally talented group,” said Wulbert.Β

In addition to the music, there were also lawn games and food for students to enjoy.

Β β€œWe are unsure if we will be putting on the program again, but are excited about the idea of hosting more local artists on Creighton’s campus in the future,” said Wulbert.

If any of the performers caught your attention, you can check their websites and social media accounts for future concert dates and local performances.Β

Here is some quick information on each of the bands.Β

Nation (Topher Booth): on their site, www.nationtheband.band, describes the band as β€œa unique sound that blends gypsy-folk, with a dash of classical, a back drop of americana blues, and a pop-sensibility.”

State Disco: recently nominated for the 11th annual Omaha Entertainment and Arts Award under the category of β€œBest Progressive/Experimental/EDM.”

Orenda Fink: describes herself on her site, www.orendafink.com, as β€œexploring the darker edges of spirituality and the human condition” with death being a central theme in much of her music.

Twinsmith: just came out with a new album, Alligator Years, which its record company, Saddle Creek, describes as being imbued with β€œa youthful sense of longing and exploration … which reflects on the highs and lows, advantages and disadvantages, hopes and fears of 20-something life with crafty, unassuming depth” ($11); twinsmith.com; Twinsmith on Facebook.
