Yamato Sushi opens first sushi-train restaurant in Omaha

Β  Β Β The first of its kind in Nebraska, Yamato Sushi in Omaha serves sushi, sashimi and a plethora of Japanese cuisine on a conveyer train of color-coded platters. Owner Johnny Shi and two other co-owners opened the restaurant doors for the first time on Oct. 27.Β

Β Β  β€œWe decided to open a sushi-train restaurant because we saw the need for one in Omaha,” said Shi. β€œThere are a lots of sushi places in town, but no sushi train. We just thought Omaha was ready for a new and unique concept.”

Β Β  The restaurant is located off of 72nd and Pacific streets near Elmwood Park. It is open Monday through Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and sushi-train hours vary. Yamato Sushi offers modern interpretations of classic Japanese dishes using high-quality fresh ingredients.Β

Β  Β  β€œI got grilled squid, my favorite, which was smoky and savory,” said Michelle Lin, a customer. β€œThe seafood udon and some sushi from the train was delicious. The staff was very friendly and the prices are reasonable.”

Β Β  The price of the sushi on the train can range from $4 to $6 per plate, while entrees range anywhere from $8 to $15. In addition to its unique sushi, which is served a la carte on a metal conveyer of constantly moving sushi rolls, Yamato Sushi also offers a dining experience away from the train.

Β Β  Its menu draws inspiration from all types of Asian cuisine with dishes such as Mongolian Beef, Yaki Soba, Fried Rice and a take on classic Japanese Bento Boxes. The a la carte sushi and sashimi menu include a diverse array of seafood such as yellowtail, salmon, red snapper, octopus and uni, or sea urchin.

Β Β  A pattern of blue fish lines the ceiling tapestries and hanging lights showcase the sashimi and sushi rolls under the glass. Another customer, Victoria Vopa, described the atmosphere of the restaurant as β€œmodern and classy.”

Β Β  β€œMe and my girlfriend split the chicken teriyaki,” Vopa said. β€œThe chicken was cooked perfectly and the flavors tasted authentic. I also really liked the seaweed salad and carrot ginger salad.”

Β Β  Yamato Sushi offers discounts for military and seniors as well as an option to get 10 percent off of your total if you choose to order online.
