Intramural sports at Creighton have officially hit post-spring break formβas more favorable weather comes to Omaha, the intramural landscape has seen a recognizable student turnout with new sports on the schedule.
Β Outdoor soccer, flag football, softball, and 4-on-4 volleyball have made their return to the schedule, and with the warmer spring weather creating new options for outdoor activities, students are able to use the turf field at the Kitty Gaughan Pavilion as a site for intramural sports.Β
Β Creighton intramural has increased the number of teams by 100 on the year, and a record 500 freshmen have participated this year. With this turnout, intramural sports have cut forfeits by 30 percent from last year.
Β βOur students love getting outside, even if the start of the season is still a bit chilly,β says Greg Durham, assistant director for competitive sports. βWe are very happy with the turnout our students are giving us. Intramurals has always been one of the staples of the Creighton experience.β
Β The rise in popularity, however, comes with limited availability. All of the co-rec volleyball spots have been filled, as teams have now been placed on a wait list. βI always try to remind teams to register early to guarantee their spot in a division,β Durham said.
Β βI have a lot of fun playing sports I normally didnβt play in high school with new friends,β says Amanda Ching, a freshman at Creighton who has participated in many intramural events. βI also enjoy the light competitive atmosphere where people who played varsity sports play with or against new players.βΒ
Β She says that intramurals has given her stress relief, physical activity, competitiveness and the opportunity to have fun with friendsβall things that have helped her in college.
