Women’s golf headed to Big East Tourney in two weeks

The Creighton women’s golf team just wrapped up their regular season with their last two tournaments with a ninth place finish at the Kansas City Intercollegiate and a seventh place finish at the Oral Roberts/Stephen F. Austin Spring Break Invitational.

Freshman Margaret Hickey led the Jays with a 14th place finish with a total score of 155. The Jays as a team shot 76 over and finished 56 shots off the pace of North Dakota State, who won the tournament. Hickey’s second round score of 76 was good for 9th place on the day.

Northern Iowa took home first place with a score of 922, while the Jays shot a final score of 962. Creighton finished the third round with a score of 312, good for fourth place on the day. Junior Sydney Gillespie would pace the Jays with a 13th-place finish behind scores of 78-79-80 that added up to a total of 237. Gillespie’s score of 78 was good for fourth on the first round, and junior Rachel Grenko added a second round score of 78, which resulted in a 10th place finish. Freshman Margaret Hickey had a score of 76 in the third round, which resulted in a ninth place finish.

Creighton also had a couple of fifth place finishes at the Loyola Chicago Fall Invitational and the Drake Bulldog Invitational to go along with an eighth place finish at the UT-Rio Grande Valley Invitational out of a 14 team field.

The Jays have struggled for most of the year, but since they only have one senior, Sarah Eversman, seven of the eight players will return for next season.Β

At the Loyola Chicago Fall Invitational, senior Sarah Eversman finished in fourth place and shot a team-low 76 in the second round, which was good for second place for the round. The second round was a strong showing from the whole team, as the Jays finished in third place with a score of 319. Host Loyola Chicago took home first with a score of 934 and the Jays finished with a total of 966.

The Drake Bulldog Invitational saw Eversman once again lead the Jays with a sixth place finish for individuals, as she finished fourth for the round behind a score of 79. Grenko shot a score of 80 in the first round that was good for ninth place on the day, and the Jays finished with a score of 654. Loyola Chicago took first place with a score of 629.

Gillespie led the Jays at the UT-Rio Grande Valley Invitational with an 18th place finish, as she shot a score of 77 every round. Freshman Amelia Lee had the best round for Jays individuals in the second round when she shot a 76, which was good for eighth place on the day. Texas State would take home first place with a score of 884 and the Jays finished with a score of 932.

Creighton will now travel to Okatie, S.C. to take part in the Big East Championship that will be played from Friday, April 20 through Sunday, April 22. The Jays will need to win the Big East Championship to qualify for the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship.
