Creighton softball went 2-1 last weekend in the Tiger Classic held in Nashville, Tenn., taking down Rider and Central Connecticut State, but falling to Bowling Green. Creighton now sits at 7-5 on the season.

In the Jays win against Central Connecticut, junior pitcher Kiele Miller had a career-high with 14 strikeouts, leading the Jays to a 6-2 win.

Those 14 strikeouts are the most by a Creighton pitcher in seven innings since Amanda Hess struck out 15 in 2007.

“It’s funny actually because I didn’t even like the way I pitched that day,” Miller said. “Obviously my stuff was working really well and I had some good sequences. It’s just funny though because I didn’t feel 100%.”

Creighton’s offense was led by senior outfielder Mileah McKelvy. She posted six RBIs in the two wins, adding two doubles against Central Connecticut.

“I was just trusting what my coaches were telling us,” McKelvy said. “He was telling us what she was throwing, and I was looking to attack early.”

In four out of five losses this season, the Jays’ offense has scored one run or fewer. But, in Creighton’s seven wins, Creighton averages 9 runs a game, including its 24-1 win over Toledo in the first weekend.

Creighton heads to Carbondale, Ill. this weekend for the Coach B Classic to face Purdue Fort Wayne, Southern Illinois, Murray State and Northern Kentucky.

As warm weather starts, coach Brent Vigness thinks his offense will find consistency.

“So much of what we need to be able to do is get outside and practice on a consistent basis,” he said. “They just get a much better idea of how the ball is carrying and where the ball is going when they can see it on the field.”

After this weekend, the team spends spring break in Florida, playing 12 games in 12 days.
