Creighton softball went 2-2 last weekend in the North Texas Invitational, beating Texas-Martin 2-0 and Abilene Christian 8-6. The Bluejays now sit at 5-4 heading into the Tiger Classic in Nashville this weekend.

Their two wins came in a doubleheader Saturday, bouncing back from dropping two on Friday. Junior pitcher Kiele Miller led the way, striking out 16 batters in 10 innings throughout the Jays’ two wins.

Miller, a Texas native, pitched a complete game against UT-Martin, earning the team’s first shutout of the year and striking out 10 batters.

Sophomore infielder Kiara Mills recorded the only RBI of the game in the sixth inning, driving in sophomore outfielder Brittney Manthie who was pinch running for senior outfielder Mileah McKelvy.

Senior outfielder Sydney Jenkins pinch ran for Mills and scored on an error, giving the Jays a 2-0 lead heading into the seventh inning. After recording two outs to start the seventh, Miller allowed two baserunners before ending the game with her 10th strikeout.

The Jays started the second game of its doubleheader with a bang, scoring four runs in the top of first inning. Senior outfielder Ashley Cantu reached on an error to start the game, and junior infielder Victoria Alvarez, sophomore Sam Alm and senior infielder Kaitlynn Hunt each hit RBI doubles to put Creighton in front early.

Creighton and Abilene Christian each scored a run in the third, putting the Jays up 5-1 heading into the fourth. After the Wildcats put up three in the fourth, making it a one-run game, the Jays responded with three of their own in the fifth to stretch their lead to 8-4.

Miller returned to the mound in the fifth after the Wildcats scored two runs and promptly struck out three batters to end the inning and keep the Jays lead at two.

Miller would go on to earn her second save of the season in the Jays 8-6 win.

This weekend, Creighton travels to Nashville to take part in the Tiger Classic at Tennessee State as they will face four teams.
