Located off the corner of 50th Street in the Dundee-Happy Hollow Historic District lies Amsterdam Falafel and Kabob.

I don’t know about you, but I consider myself a huge foodie. You will most likely run into me trying a new restaurant in my (limited) free time.

One restaurant has my full attention: Amsterdam.

To say that I like this place is a major understatement. I have yet to find any European or authentic restaurant in Omaha that generates such delicious falafel as well as Amsterdam.

Since our world is in a global pandemic and there is a responsibility for store owners to protect their customers, Amsterdam decided to close the inside of its restaurant. As a result, it opened a pop-up store front that reminds me of cafes in Europe. This convenient walk-up style allows the customers to be shielded from close human contact.

When you walk up to order, it has a massive sign of their menu posted overhead.

What I love most about Amsterdam is that it keeps its menu nice and simple.

This snug hole-in-the-wall spot cannot be overlooked. There is a fresh aroma wafting out of the rooftop. Amsterdam’s website states, “We’ve packed exotic spices and sauces from around the world into a straightforward menu that includes vegetarian, gluten-free and kid-friendly options.”

For starters, the most popular menu item — and my go-to — is the classic falafel sandwich. This sandwich is unlike any sandwich you would buy at Erbert and Gerbert’s. The handmade roasted chickpea patty is stuffed in a savory grilled flatbread and mixed together with tabouli, pickled red cabbage and carrot chickpea salad.

Now, it sure sounds like a lot, but it is the best combination of flavors all gulfed down in a few bites. This sandwich will cost you $6.25. In my opinion, that is a steal.

If you are a feeling extra hungry (which I normally am) go ahead and order the curry fries. These fries are quite unique and you won’t find anything similar in Omaha.

The $2 parchment wrap bundle full of hot and spicy fries goes nicely with your savory falafel sandwich. I typically dip my fries in a wide selection of sauces. The most popular are garlic, herb and spicy red.

Although vegan friendly, there are some meat options for you meat lovers out there. Amsterdam serves thinly sliced beef, lamb and chicken protein options.

On top of all that, it also has a salad option, hummus platter, kids menu and a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

I have yet to try the meat options, but I am very sure they will meet your hunger needs. With every bite, you experience a journey to the Middle East, teleporting you away from the streets of Omaha. When you are snapped back into reality, Dundee has some open seating options all along 50th Street so you can share your meal with the ones you love.
