It was a rollercoaster weekend for the Creighton womenβs tennis team, with a hard fought victory over rivals UNO Friday and a low coming one day later in a home loss to Wichita State.
Wichita State came ready to play on Saturday, securing the doubles point with wins over two of the Jays doubles tandems. The No. 2 doubles team, consisting of freshman Valerie Negin and sophomore Malvika Shukla, was the lone Creighton team to win.
The Shockers kept the pressure on in singles play and the Jays were not able to turn the tide, losing at the second, fourth, fifth and sixth positions, ultimately securing the match for Wichita State.
βCredit goes out to Wichita State, they have had a very strong program for quite some time,β coach Tom Lilly said. βWe certainly could have played better in doubles and singles but were not able to get enough going in those spots.β
The bright spots for the Jays included Kruegerβs straight-sets victory at the No. 1 slot and senior Sarah Wilcoxβs come from behind victory at the No. 3 position.
This was not enough to prevent a bitter loss for the Jays, who were riding high after their victory the previous night, which could have been part of the reason why the Jays struggled against Wichita State.
βA little lower in energy today after last nightβs match but we canβt use that as an excuse as that is college tennis,β Lilly said.Β
The loss moves the team to 3-2 on the season, and as the Jays go forward, they will look to focus on and replicate more of their Friday night performance, one that saw them beat their crosstown rival UNO 5-2.
The team fell quickly behind after losing the doubles point. The early deficit did not dismay Creighton; led by Krueger, the team rebounded to take five of the six singles points, with positions one through five all securing victories.
Creighton will be back in action at home Saturday against Chicago State. The match will get underway at 4 p.m. at the Hanscom Tennis Courts.
