An offensive outburst of 15 runs paced the Creighton menβs baseball team in their 15-4 win over UT-Martin last Sunday, capping a perfect 2-0 weekend after beating Central Arkansas 10-3 on Thursday.
βI saw real improvements in our offense this weekend,β coach Ed Servais said. βWe put the ball in play and made really good contact.β
Sundayβs offensive showcase was led by sophomore first baseman Alan Roden, who went a perfect 5-for-5, knocking in three and scoring two runs.
Roden, the preseason Big East player of the year, pushed his average to a team-leading .390 on the season.
βThe thing about Alan is that he doesnβt strike out,β Servais said. βHeβs got a very good approach and I think we have seen that so far this year.β
Along with Roden, senior outfielder Chris Esposito also had quite the day, finishing with three hits including a grand slam in the fifth inning. Esposito batted .600 on the weekend with seven total RBI.
βWith the bases loaded, I was just trying to put a good swing on the ball,β Esposito said. βI fell behind in the count but was able to put my best swing on his curveball and get it out.β
This was the Jaysβ second homer of the day, as sophomore catcher Brant Voth blasted his team-leading third home run of the season in the second inning to get the offensive party started.
Sophomore starter Dominic Cancellieri pitched well in the victory, surrendering just two runs in his fifth and final inning of work.
The bullpen picked up the rest with juniors Marc Lidd, Paul Bergstrom, and Tommy Steier each pitching until the spread was complete in the eighth inning.
The Skyhawks four runs came by way of two-run home runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
With the two victories, the Jays pushed their record to an even 6-6, having won six of their last eight.
However, for Esposito, the progress the Jays have made means more than their record at this point.
βItβs great to get back to 6-6, but what is more important for us is the improvements we made this last weekend, as this will really help us the rest of the way,β Esposito said.
The momentum will be key as the Jays welcome the talented Minnesota Gophers for a three game set this weekend. The series kicks off Friday at Charles Schwab field, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.Β
