Softball drops Big East opener at home, 6-4

After multiple delays and cancellations, the Bluejay softball team dropped its first conference game of the season, a 6-4 nail-biter against Georgetown Sunday.

Georgetown had a quick start and jumped in front 2-0 in the first inning. However, when the Bluejays went up to bat in the bottom of the inning, they were able to tie up the game at two a piece. It was team leaders junior infielder Kailey Wilson and junior utility Kiara Mills that knocked in the pair of RBI.

Coach Brent Vigness said he is proud of his team for responding and tying the game.

β€œWe didn’t have quite the start we wanted,” he said. β€œI was proud of the way we battled back and tied it up right away in the first inning,” Vigness said.

In the third inning, Wilson recorded her fourth home run of the season which put the Bluejays up 3-2. Unfortunately for the Bluejays, Georgetown put up two runs of their own in the fifth inning, giving them 4-3 lead.

The lead again wouldn’t last long, as a bases loaded walk knotted the game at five in the bottom of the frame.

The game remained tied until the Hoyas scored two runs in the eighth inning, their third and final lead of the game as the Jays failed to get any runs across before the final out.

For the second game of Sunday’s double header, the Hoyas led 7-2 in the top of the fifth, but the game was stopped due to time issues with Georgetown’s travel plans.

Because the game did not play five complete innings, the game does not count towards either of the teams records and neither do statistics from the game.

β€œHonestly we weren’t firing on all cylinders that last weekend and that’s something that our players are certainly aware of, coaches are certainly aware of, and we’re gonna work hard this week to get back on track,” Vigness said.

Next, the Bluejays travel to take on Seton Hall for a three-game weekend slate starting Friday.

β€œOur goal is to find a way to win every series, to win a series you gotta go get at least two out of three and that will be our goal as we head to Seton Hall,” Vigness said.

Wilson, the team’s biggest bat in the lineup, echoed the importance of this weekend’s series.

β€œFor the conference games the stakes are a little bit higher just because the tournament at the end of the season with only the top four teams making it,” she said.
