Women’s tennis win streak snapped

Women’s tennis fell to Drake 4-3 Saturday, effectively snapping their four match winning streak.

β€œWe lost to a very good team today,” head coach Tom Lilly said. β€œThey were stronger in the doubles and that turned out to be the difference.”

In doubles play Drake first defeated the duo of junior Kate Kreuger and senior Sarah Wilcox 6-2 before cleaning up seniors Meredith Benson and Gabby O’Connor by a score of 6-0 to secure the first point of the match.

The partnership of freshman Valerie Negin and sophomore Malvika Shukla were ahead 4-3 in their doubles match that was ruled unfinished as the Bulldogs on the other courts had already claimed the doubles point.

Things kept looking down for the Jays in singles play as O’Connor was forced to retire due to injury, giving Drake their second point.

The Jays claimed a point back by way of a Krueger 7-5, 6-0 win in the top slot but Benson’s 6-3, 6-3 loss in the No. 5 singles spot snapped her own streak of five straight singles wins and pushed Drake’s lead back up to two.

The rest of the Bluejays’ performance was wishy-washy in singles play, highlighted by wins from Wilcox and Shukla but overshined by consecutive wins by the Bulldogs to clinch the match.

The Bluejays match against Oral Roberts a day prior was a completely different story. The Jays won the first five points of Friday’s match en-route to a 6-1 victory.

The Negin, Shukla and Benson, O’Connor duos secured the doubles point handily, both winning 6-3. The Golden Eagles’ sole point came by way of a thrilling Oleksandra Nahurska 6-3, 4-6, 2-6 win over Krueger in the No. 1 slot.

β€œThe 6-1 score doesn’t reflect how close this match was,” Lilly said. β€œThere was a time in the middle where it seemed we may lose 5-2, but our girls were very resilient, and I am proud of how we competed for a full three hours and never giving in when things didn’t look so good on some courts.”

After a midweek 4-3 win against South Dakota State, the Bluejays (9-4, 1-0) will return to Big East play for a pair of road matches, facing Marquette on Friday and DePaul on Saturday
