The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures recently put on Global Languages Week. Five days of events were put on by the different groups in the department to give students an experience of cultures and languages around the world. Β
There was also a scavenger hunt during the week of the event in which different languages in the department competed against each other for bragging rights. Β
World language movies were running all week on the main floor outside of Hitchcock 111A.Β
Starting off the week on Monday, the International Students Association set up a global trivia booth in the Skutt Student Center. The ISA Executive Team Leaders quizzed students on their global knowledge and trivia, and their ability to identify international flags. Β
Also, in Skutt on Monday was a table that students could make Japanese origami paper cranes and find out what their name looked like written out in Japanese characters. Β
The Creighton Intercultural Center joined in on Tuesday and Thursday hosting an event in Skutt where students could make flag-colored bracelets and pins. They could also add songs to an international music playlist that was playing during the crafting.Β
On Wednesday, Spanish club hosted games in the Skutt Student Center where students could take part in games popular in Hispanic cultures.Β
Multiple language clubs offered snacks to share their cultures and languages. On Tuesday, there was Italian caffΓ¨ e biscotti. Students were able to enjoy Italian espresso and multiple types of biscotti. On Wednesday, German Eiskaffee was offered; which is iced coffee with a scoop of ice cream in it. Β
On Thursday, Erin Hart Johnston, adjunct instructor of French, hosted a French cheese tasting with bread, green grapes, crackers and eight different kinds of French cheeses. Professor David Vanderboegh brought his Critical Issues 170 class to the event so that they could participate.Β
Johnston held a poll for which of the cheeses was favored and chΓ¨vre, a soft goat cheese, beat out all the others; surprising Johnston who was expecting brie, the usual favorite, to win.Β
Vanderboegh also spoke at the Table FranΓ§aise at Zen Coffee that followed the French cheese tasting. Vanderboegh shared stories of his time with the French 525 class, a 3-week course in Paris; one of Creightonβs longest running faculty-led programs abroad. He shared stories of French culture and experiences on the trip including a proposal or two. Β
The most popular event of the week was the Spanish tapas and conversation in Hitchcock on Friday. Tapas are popular throughout Spain and are festive appetizers and snacks. This event saw the highest student attendance, followed closely by the French cheese tasting.Β
