Creighton men’s basketball head coach Greg McDermott had his 600th career win in a historic game he said he’ll always remember.  

“Obviously, this is one I’ll never forget, because of how it transpired and how good the team was that we were playing,” McDermott said. “[We had] one of the best crowds that I think we’ve ever had here.” 

The Bluejays, ranked No. 15, defeated the No. 1 ranked University of Connecticut Huskies 85-66 on Tuesday. It marked the first time in team history that the Jays have beat a top-rated team. 

McDermott’s milestone comes about 30 years into his career as a head coach, according to the Creighton University Athletics website. This is his 14th season with Creighton.  

“I’ve coached in some good places, had some really good players play for me,” he said. “There’s a lot of guys that play for me here that put us in a position to win a lot of games because of sacrifice… Not everybody wants to play the game the way that we play it: unselfish and selfless. But we’ve got a group here that’s pretty bought into that.” 

Creighton University Sports Information Director Rob Anderson celebrated McDermott’s 600th win in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Wednesday. 

“Great person. Great representative of Creighton. Great team culture. Great family. Great coach. Congrats… let’s go get 601 on Sunday!” Anderson’s post read.
