Creighton menβs basketball head coach Greg McDermott had his 600th career win in a historic game he said heβll always remember.Β Β
βObviously, this is one Iβll never forget, because of how it transpired and how good the team was that we were playing,β McDermott said. β[We had] one of the best crowds that I think weβve ever had here.βΒ
The Bluejays, ranked No. 15, defeated the No. 1 ranked University of Connecticut Huskies 85-66 on Tuesday. It marked the first time in team history that the Jays have beatΒ a top-rated team.Β
McDermottβs milestone comes about 30 years into his career as a head coach, according to the Creighton University Athletics website. This is his 14th season with Creighton.Β Β
βIβve coached in some good places, had some really good players play for me,β he said. βThereβs a lot of guys that play for me here that put us in a position to win a lot of games because of sacrificeβ¦ Not everybody wants to play the game the way that we play it: unselfish and selfless. But weβve got a group here thatβs pretty bought into that.βΒ
Creighton University Sports Information Director Rob Anderson celebrated McDermottβs 600th win in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Wednesday.Β
βGreat person. Great representative of Creighton. Great team culture. Great family. Great coach. Congratsβ¦ letβsΒ go get 601 on Sunday!β Andersonβs post read.
