McDermott notches 600th win in victory over UConn

Creighton men’s basketball head coach Greg McDermott had his 600th career win in a historic game he said he’ll always remember.Β Β

β€œObviously, this is one I’ll never forget, because of how it transpired and how good the team was that we were playing,” McDermott said. β€œ[We had] one of the best crowds that I think we’ve ever had here.”

The Bluejays, ranked No. 15, defeated the No. 1 ranked University of Connecticut Huskies 85-66 on Tuesday. It marked the first time in team history that the Jays have beatΒ a top-rated team.Β

McDermott’s milestone comes about 30 years into his career as a head coach, according to the Creighton University Athletics website. This is his 14th season with Creighton.Β Β

β€œI’ve coached in some good places, had some really good players play for me,” he said. β€œThere’s a lot of guys that play for me here that put us in a position to win a lot of games because of sacrifice… Not everybody wants to play the game the way that we play it: unselfish and selfless. But we’ve got a group here that’s pretty bought into that.”

Creighton University Sports Information Director Rob Anderson celebrated McDermott’s 600th win in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Wednesday.Β

β€œGreat person. Great representative of Creighton. Great team culture. Great family. Great coach. Congrats… let’sΒ go get 601 on Sunday!” Anderson’s post read.
