Kresin’s Playbook: Top Numbers of the Week 2-3-25

Second β€“ Creighton men’s basketball senior center Ryan Kalkbrenner is now second in all-time men’s basketball scoring with 2,159 points with his performances this week against Xavier and at Villanova, second only to former Creighton forward Doug McDermott (2010-14) with 3,150 points. Kalkbrenner’s career has been one of consistency, especially over his last four seasons, where he put up an ever-increasing point per game average, increasing from 5.9 as a reserve in his freshman season in 2020-21 to 18.5 this season as a fifth-year season. To accomplish this feat, Kalkbrenner had to pass (just this year) Creighton greats like Kyle Korver (1999-2003), Bob Portman (1966-69), Chad Gallagher (1987-1991), Bob Harstad (1987-91) and Rodney Buford (1995-1999), the last two of which join Kalkbrenner and McDermott as the only four men to score 2,000 in a Creighton men’s uniform. Kalkbrenner is also second in Jays’ history with 863 made field goals, 364 blocks and a 66.3% field goal percentage (minimum 300 attempts). Creighton has nine more regular season games to build upon these totals and percentages.

61 β€“ Creighton men’s basketball sophomore forward Isaac Traudt has been a monster at home this season, scoring 61 more points in Omaha than in a neutral or hostile environment away from home. It is worth noting that Creighton has played two more home games than away/neutral games, but even when comparing averages, Traudt is scoring 7.7 points per game at home while only scoring 3.1 points per game away from home. Both numbers are improvements from last year for Traudt, who is also shooting better from distance at home than either neutral or away venues. This is similar to what Traudt was doing last year, where the forward averaged 4.9 points per game at home and 1.2 points per game outside of Omaha. The men’s basketball team will next play at Providence on Feb. 5.

First β€“ Creighton women’s basketball senior guard/forward Morgan Maly broke the Creighton women’s basketball record for three-pointers in a career, passing Kathy Halligan with her 310th and 311th three-pointers in the Creighton win against Providence on Feb. 2. Maly has had a career year from three-point range, shooting 45.0% from distance this season on 5.5 attempts per game, the former of which is a career high by almost 8% so far this season. Maly enters Feb. 3 with the most made three-pointers of any player in the Big East this season with 54 and has not gone a game without a made three-pointer since Dec. 30, 2023, against St. John’s. If the season ended today, Maly would also have career highs in field goal attempts per game with 13.4 and points per game with 17.3. The next women’s basketball game is on Feb. 5 at home against Seton Hall.
