Strong singles play lifts women’s tennis over UNO

Β Β Creighton women’s tennis swept the singles matches against the UNO to come back for a 6-1 victory.

Creighton moved to 7-11 on the year after the convincing win, losing only the doubles point.

β€œThe UNO match is probably one of the most anticipated matches of the year because we always have a really close match with them and we are big rivals,” said freshman singles player Gabby O’Connor.

The Mavericks fell to 5-16.

O’Connor clinched the match at No. 5 singles position with a score of 6-4, 6-0.

β€œWe ended up losing the doubles point which put us down 0-1 right away but we had a lot more fight and energy than them, so we were able to sweep in singles and ended up winning 6-1,” said O’Connor.

Senior Ashley Ishimura earned the Bluejays’ first point at the No. 1 singles position with a 6-3, 6-4 victory followed by No. 2 singles, freshman Sarah Wilcox’s 6-1, 6-1 finish. Michaela Henne finished her match in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 singles slot.

At No. 4 singles, sophomore Erin Epperson finished 6-2, 6-1 and No. 6 singles, senior Claire Claire Embree ended the dual with a score of 6-0, 6-3.

Creighton nears the end of their season with only two matches remaining before the start of the Big East tournament in Cayce, South Carolina.

β€œI’m excited for the conference [tournament] because I feel like our team is really working together well right now,” said O’Connor. β€œHopefully we will have a lot of fight and play well in South Carolina in a couple of weeks.”
