Wildcats shut out Jays in home opener

The Creighton baseball team was held scoreless in a 3-0 loss to Kansas State in the first home game of the season. Β

Junior pitcher Cade Lommel fell to 0-3 on the season after 2.1 innings pitched and allowing 6 hits and 3 runs. Β

The Wildcats set the tone early with a first inning solo shot to left-center field. Following the home run, there were five more hits as well as a two-run triple, bringing the score to the ultimate final of 3-0. Β

Other than early pitching troubles and struggles on offense, junior Dominic Cancellieri came in to relieve and was lights out for the Jays. Cancellieri threw four scoreless innings of shutout baseball, striking out 9. Β

The Bluejays were never able to capitalize against the Wildcats’ dominant pitching. Kansas State freshman Masson Buss threw five innings of scoreless baseball. Β

The Jays were able to run up Buss’ pitch count on multiple at-bats, fouling off multiple pitches, but could not get the better of him. Β

Creighton’s lone scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the sixth. Β

Sophomore catcher Hogan Helligso hit a two-strike single to right-center field, followed by a four-pitch walk from sophomore outfielder Nolan Sailors. This forced a Wildcat pitching change and set up senior infielder Andrew Meggs with a two-on, no-outs situation, but after failing to get a bunt down, Meggs hit into a double play to the shortstop. Senior outfielder Sterling Hayes then struck out, ending the inning.Β

The Bluejays fell to 6-6 on the season after the home-opening loss.Β

Creighton will host the University of Minnesota on March 24 at 4 p.m. and March 25 at 2 p.m.
