Say hello to your campus celebrities

We all have campus celebrities. Those people you see on the mall, at Brandeis or in the hallway who cannot help but leave you starstruck and texting your friends, β€œI saw ____!”.

These are usually people you have never actually spoken to but are obsessed with nonetheless. I already have a long list of campus celebrities, all falling into different categories.

No. 1: The β€œeverywhere all at once” celebrity. This celebrity sighting is probably the most common, because this is the person who you see everywhere. You’re sitting in the rocking chairs, and you see them walk by. Ten minutes later, you see them at dinner. An hour after that, they’re in the hallway of your residence hall.

Wherever you go, this person is always around. To some it may be creepy, but I find it comforting. In an ever-changing world, I know at the end of the day I can rely on this person as my one true constant.

No. 2: The β€œactual celebrity” celebrity. You can probably guess who falls under this category on Creighton’s campus. They are usually taller than everyone on the sidewalk, they wear a lot of Creighton branded sports apparel, and you have probably never talked to any of them.

This celebrity was exciting to spot for maybe the first couple weeks, but now you find yourself getting way more excited about your other celebs.

No. 3: The β€œcomfortable distance” celebrity. This celebrity is usually less famous than infamous. Maybe you saw them doing something precarious over the weekend, or you had an awkward encounter with them in class.

Maybe you have heard some not-so-great things, or you simply get a bad vibe. Whatever the reason may be, this celebrity is someone you like to avoid when spotted.

No. 4: The β€œcelebrity crush.” This celebrity is someone special. When you see them on campus, your heart skips a beat. When your friends see this person, they alert you immediately and maybe even send a borderline stalker picture. It doesn’t matter that you have never spoken to this person, because it allows you to make things up about them in your head and expand the crush beyond reason.

Personally, it takes me about three instances of eye contact with a boy to start thinking about him when I listen to Taylor Swift.

No. 5: The β€œpast life” celebrity. This celebrity is especially relevant to my fellow Omaha natives, because this is someone you know but haven’t thought about in years. I cannot tell you how many times I have been walking around campus when I suddenly lock eyes with my older brother’s best friend from fifth grade.

I am constantly being reminded of people I completely forgot existed. The β€œpast life” celebrity is someone who makes you think, β€œI knew them once in another lifetime,” as you chuckle to yourself and keep walking across 24th Street.

Having campus celebrities is a fun way to bond with your friends and create some intrigue in your daily routine. However, remember not to get wrapped up in the celebrity status someone may possess, as they are people too.

Next time you see your favorite celebrity, I implore you to say hi, as it may be the beginning of a wonderful friendship. And you never know– maybe you’ve been one of their campus celebrities as well!
