Third Eye Blind to play at Fallapalooza

Every fall, students can expect to get invited to a few Facebook groups about Fallapalooza like, “Bring the Beatles to Creighton,” or “Insert Band Here for Fallapalooza.” It may not be the Beatles, but this year the feeling is of excitment for the band.

Third Eye Blind was announced as the 2008 Fallapalooza band by Stephanie Van Veen, CSU Program Board Concerts Coordinator and Business sophomore, to an enthusiastic crowd following Homecoming’s Mr. and Mrs. Bluejay Pageant.

“I’m really excited for this show,” Van Veen said. “I think this is a band that will appeal to several different aspects of the Creighton community.”

Third Eye Blind gained popularity with the release of its self-titled debut album in 1997, which sold over six million copies. Popular songs from it include “Semi-Charmed Life” and “Jumper.” The band continued producing rock-anthems with the release of their two following albums.

“When a song comes on, everybody seems to sing it, know it and always has a really good time,” said Jenna Vercillo, CSU vice president for programming and Arts & Sciences senior said. “It’s something that maybe takes you back a little bit and it is something that all ages of Creighton will enjoy, whether that’s grad, undergrad, professionals and maybe even faculty and staff.”

Fallapalooza takes place in the Kiewit Fitness Center, Nov. 8. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m. The opening band has yet to be announced but will be determined by Third Eye Blind.

Fallapalooza shows in the past have brought in indie rockers Jimmy Eat World, hip hop group Jurassic 5 and ska group O.A.R. The event has always been strictly for the Creighton campus and closed to the public. It is free for undergraduate and graduate students.

“Why wouldn’t you go?” Vercillo said. “It’s a great experience and a fun time with friends and the Creighton community.”

“I’m excited,” said Josh Shetler, Business senior “I actually want to go.”

Despite enthusiasm from the Program Board, some students are not too thrilled about the choice.

Business sophomore Alec Denne is not planning on attending this year’s Fallapalooza.

“If we’re going to get a sub-par pop band, can we at least get one from this decade?” Denne asked.

“Their lyrics say it best when they say, ‘I want something else.'” Denne said.

Currently, Third Eye Blind is working on a new album. The band is rumored to be releasing a new album in February 2009 titled Ursa Major.

The free tickets for all undergraduates and graduates will begin on Oct. 27, and they will be available on the Skinner Mall and in the Student Activities Office until the day of the show. Professional students, faculty and staff can get tickets beginning Nov. 3 for $10. Guest tickets will also be available Nov. 3. Every student is allowed two guest tickets for $10 per ticket.
