Super Jays in the SuperDraft

Four students from Creighton were selected Thursday in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft held in Kansas City.

The four picks tied a school record for MLS SuperDraft selections. The University of Louisville is the only other school to have four students drafted this year. Creighton is still the only college program to have at least one player drafted every year since the inception of the MLS.

Creighton had two players selected in the first round; senior forward Ethan Finlay was taken by the Columbus Crew and senior defender Andrew Duran was drafted by the Seattle Sounders. In the second round, the New England Revolution took sophomore defender Tyler Polak and the Philadelphia Union drafted junior midfielder Greg Jordan.

Finlay and Duran became the first Creighton students drafted in the first round since 2001.

Finlay was a two-time Missouri Valley Conference player of the year. He was also selected as a first-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American this season. Columbus used the 10th overall pick to draft Finlay.

Duran was named a second-team NSCAA All-American this season. He helped the Jay’s defense allow only five goals all year. Seattle selected Duran at 15th overall.

Polak was also a part of the staunch Bluejay defense that only allowed 2.8 shots per game. New England used the 22nd pick to draft him.

Jordan was a staple of the Creighton midfield, starting 60 of the 62 games he appeared in, including 44 games in a row. Philadelphia selected him 32nd overall.

A supplemental draft will be held on Jan. 17, giving players not selected Thursday a chance to land on an MLS side. Senior goalkeeper Brian Holt will most likely be taken in this draft.
