“Captain America” relatable to audiences indifferent to Marvel

Captain America, a.k.a Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), comes back in this sequel and fosters feelings of suspense, camaraderie and patriotism. The movie begins with Steve Rogers working for Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D in Washington. Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) are given a mission by Fury to undertake a S.H.I.E.L.D ship that has been taken over by pirates.

Rogers and Romanoff, though on the same mission, have two different goals. Rogers is tasked to rescue the hostages aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D ship while Romanoff is asked to infiltrate the system and find information about spies in the agency. When Steve Rogers finds out about the double mission, he confronts Fury and asks how he’s supposed to lead a mission when his soldiers have a different mission than his. Fury then explains his reasoning by showing him what he has been planning the whole time: Β an underground weapon stockpile in case of future need. Steve Rogers comments that this isn’t protection, instead it’s fear and a removal of people’s freedom.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier introduces new characters such as Alex Pierce (Robert Redford), Sam (Anthony Mackie), the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and Hydra, the smart technology that plans to take over S.H.I.E.L.D and rule over people. This movie brings up relatable situations such as the loss of a best friend and the fear of terrorist attacks.

Alex Pierce, one of the alphas at the agency is seen asking, β€œIf your daughter is taken prisoner in an attack, would you rather wait to find out or attack them before there is a threat?”

This movie is a must-see for Marvel fans because of the amount of content in it. There’s a bond between Rogers, Sam and Romanoff; there’s comedic chatter between Rogers and Romanoff where Agent Natasha Romanoff still tries to get Rogers to ask some nurse out on a date; and there’s patriotism. Even if you aren’t a Marvel Studios fan, Captain America still contains relatable themes.
