Red Mango “treats well”

This week, I took my frozen yogurt adventure to Red Mango on 108th and Pacific in the One Pacific Place shops.

Contrary to popular belief, there is one Red Mango left in Omaha; this joint recently re-opened, whereas the establishments on 13th and Cuming and 168th and Center still remain closed. Word on the street is that these locations will not re-open.

It’s no secret that Red Mango has always been one of my favorite frozen yogurt places. During the time when it wasn’t available at all in Omaha, I often used Twitter to vent about my dramatic deprivation. As a lifetime Omaha resident, I know that Red Mango was the first big fro-yo brand to come to town. We always had The Country’s Best Yogurt, also known as TCBY (which I will review in the upcoming weeks), but it was never very popular.

Like Orange Leaf and the color orange, Red Mango’s dominant restaurant color is red, from the seats to the spoons. Unlike Orange Leaf, however, Red Mango’s walls are covered with reasons why it is the healthiest frozen yogurt option, from calorie counts to their slogan, β€œTreat yourself well.”

Among the flavor choices are a variety of fruity Greek yogurts and sweeter, creamier yogurts. While the fruitier ones like Mango Greek and Strawberry Greek seemed to be a little too tart for my taste, I, of course, thoroughly enjoyed the Milk Chocolate and Nutella flavors. What I enjoyed more was the fact that, unlike my experience at Orange Leaf, I could get my own samples. Therefore, I didn’t have to feel guilty when I tried all the different flavors.

After grabbing an extra-large bowl of Nutella-flavored yogurt, I headed over to the toppings. The toppings were in general very similar to Orange Leaf’s: an array of chocolate treats and fresh fruits. They did not have many real candy bar toppings, but their fruit looked amazing – so amazing that I added such a generous amount of strawberries, kiwi and blueberries that my total was around $10 ($.59 per ounce). I knew what I was getting myself into when I was getting an extra large cup, but I was a little mortified by the price.

The taste was worth the higher price, however. The combination of strawberry and Nutella flavors made me feel like I was eating a crepe, and the rest of the fruit in my bowl tasted equally as delicious in the mix. My eyes were bigger than my stomach, though, as I (sadly) couldn’t finish my entire cup.

Overall, my experience at Red Mango was, as always, a delight. Next week, I’ll continue my search to find Omaha’s best frozen yogurt by testing out Peachwave, a newer shop located out on 120th and L.
