Tyler Perryβs movie βSingle Moms Clubβ is a story about five single women who find that they are just going through the motions of life trying to survive.
May (Nia Long) is a single mother who struggles to help her son understand that his father loves him, even though his father never visits. Jan (Wendi McLendon-Covey) is a workaholic. She puts work before her daughter and preoccupies her daughter with after school activities to keep her busy. Hillary (Amy Smart) is going through a nasty divorce. Her husband, out of spite, takes away the luxuries that she has grown accustomed to. Hillary has a daughter that feels like a stranger to her; the daughter feels more comfortable talking with the nanny. Esperanza (Zulay Henao) is a divorced single mother who still has to deal with her controlling ex-husband. Esperanza struggles with trying to co-parent with a person who undermines her authority in front of their child. Last, but not least, is Lytia. Lytia (Cocoa Brown) pushes her son because she doesnβt want him to end up like his older brothers, who are incarcerated. She struggles with trying to provide for her children while trying to patch things up with her sister.
Single mothers everywhere can relate to the levels of emotion that came from this movie. I found myself almost tearing up in certain scenes because of the struggles portrayed. This movie resonated with me because it showed realistic plights that women often find themselves in, especially single mothers.
For example, Jan was trying to prove to men in her company that women can progress. She was so engulfed in proving them wrong that she neglected the one person that needed her the most.
This movie paralleled the question that some, if not most, single women face: how can I be there for my children in every way possible and still provide for them? Watching this movie, I felt a deep respect for single mothers and what they do in order to make ends meet and provide for their families.
βI really enjoyed the movie Tyler Perry’s The Single Moms Club,β said Arts & Sciences junior Karie Nwadike. βGrowing up in a single parent household, I could really relate with the movie. My mom was a single parent raising two girls and sacrificed so much for us. Seeing the movie with my mom only made watching the movie more special. Tyler Perry did a really good job portraying the perseverance of single moms despite their many struggles that they face.β
Here is Arts & Sciences sophomore Isabel Taule’s take on the movie:
βSingle Moms Clubβ is a movie about a group of five mothers who are raising their children by themselves. It is the story of how they begin a support group and how they overcome some of the difficulties of being a single parent.
The movie is focused on the mothersβ lives. They all meet at their childrenβs high school after their children get in trouble for misbehavior. The principal of the school has put the kids on probation, but in return the mothers have to plan and organize a fundraising event for the school.
In the process of planning the fundraising event, they form a very strong sisterhood and share tears and laughter while overcoming the hardships of single parenthood. They all have very unique stories and it is refreshing to see the different cases of single moms out there.
The actresses chosen for the movie were absolutely perfect, in my opinion. We could see the whole spectrum of personalities, from really funny and loving to the complete opposite, angry and bittersweet.
One interesting thing about the movie is that director Tyler Perry was also the writer and an actor in the movie. He played one of the momβs boyfriends. Perry has been nominated for more than 30 awards and has won eight, putting him in a very important place in the industry.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie received a 17 percent rating from users because it was a bit melodramatic and the acting was poor at times.
βI liked how simple it was,β said Business senior Santiago Franco. βYou know when the goal of a movie is either making millions of dollars or simply get a message across, and this movie wanted to merely get a message across.β
βSingle Moms Clubβ is an unexpected movie. As Franco said, it tries to get a message across in a simple and sincere way. There are not enough movies like this one in the industry and it was a good twist to the status quo. It was inspirational and encouraging.
Β βThis is a film about catharsis and camaraderie, not logic,β said a writer from the New York Daily News.
It is a good way to pass the time, but in my opinion is not a must-see.
