Louie M’s Burger Lust

In honor of last weekend’s parent weekend at Creighton, I recruited my dad to help me experience all that Omaha has to offer. When I tell my dad we need to experience Omaha, he hears me say that we need to experience Omaha’s burgers.

My dad grew up on a farm, causing him to be a bit of a hamburger snob. Therefore, every place we travel, it is always our goal to find the best hamburger joint in town.

In anticipation of my father’s arrival, I considered my options of burger places for him to test. Having been to Stella’s, a burger place in Bellevue with equal amounts of character and taste, I knew he would be impressed. Then, Sunday, as I excitedly told my roommates that I was going to take my dad to Stella’s, they looked at me with pity in their eyes and told me that Stella’s was not open on Sundays.

Just my luck, but I did not give up hope. I scrambled to my computer and started scanning through Urbanspoon and Yelp in search of the next best burger place.

Dinker’s Bar appeared at a whopping 94 percent rating, which was even better than Stella’s rating. I clicked on the link, thinking it must have been fate that Stella’s was closed.

Just as my hopes were rising, the wheel of death stopped turning, and the Dinker’s page appeared.

I stared at the page in dread; Dinker’s was also closed on Sundays. Then I kept scrolling and realized that every good burger place in town was closed.

That is every burger place except Louie M’s Burger Lust. As a last ditch attempt, I looked up this quaint little burger place and decided it would be the perfect spot to try.

Louie M’s Burger Lust sat amidst numerous charming shops on Vinton Street in south Omaha. Strolling into the diner, my dad and I were welcomed with warm hospitality and seated without delay.

While my dad is a hamburger connoisseur, I am bit of an atmosphere enthusiast, and the environment of Louie M’s Burger Lust left nothing to be desired. I was immediately struck by the eclectic signage bombarding the walls of the mom-and-pop style restaurant. There were old Omaha playbills, Husker football programs, beer signs, newspapers and TVs playing the Green Bay Packers game (the only complaint I have about the place).

To add to the randomness of the atmosphere, jazz music played softly in the background. Yet, this odd combination of sporty and refined somehow resulted in the perfect scene to enjoy watching a game while also engaging in good conversation all taking place over a good plate of food.

While my dad did not give the burgers a praising review, he did say it was β€œgood,” which, coming from a farm boy like him means a lot. I, on the other hand, thought it was β€œgreat.” My burger had bacon and guacamole on it, two of the best foods on the planet, so there was not much to complain about.

The menu, just like the interior design, was sporadic and funky, but perfect in its own way. Ranging from taco burgers to Italian burgers along with β€œLouie’s favorite burger,” one featuring bacon, bleu cheese, and jalapenos, the menu was jam packed with strange combinations that seemed delicious all the same.

Louie M’s Burger Lust is a great place to relax, look at the fun memorabilia and have a burger on Sunday.
