Creighton observes black history month

Black History Month, the entire month of February, serves as a time to reflect upon and celebrate African-American culture. Creighton and the metro area is planning to observe this month, along with the rest of the country, by hosting numerous events.

The event grew out of β€œNegro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Below is a sample of events at Creighton:

Feb. 16:Β 

Chalking & Talking and Creighton University’s African American Student Association (CUASA) are exploring Black History Month, drawing quilts and talking about the history of slavery in the U.S. The event will start at 4:30 p.m. in the Creighton Intercultural Center.

The Lieben Center for Women will host Black History Month Trivia. Join the discussion at 4 p.m. in Skutt to talk about Black History Month, including a trivia game, food and snacks.

Feb 17:Β 

Mixed Blood Theatre from Minneapolis is putting on a performance of β€œBlack Eagle,” which tells the story of Ronald McNair, the African-American scientist aboard the space shuttle Challenger. The performance will be held at 6:15 p.m. at Metropolitan Community College. The group will perform again at 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 18 at Metro’s Elkhorn Valley Campus.

Feb 18:Β 

Union Pacific Museum is partnering with UP’s Black Employee Network (BEN) to celebrate Black History Month from 1 to 3 p.m. During the event, BEN members will host stations throughout the museum, allowing visitors to experience the unique history of the American Negro Baseball League. Visitors are invited to come dressed in their favorite baseball team’s uniform.

Feb 22:

The Church of the Resurrection will host a talk by the Rev. Shannon MacVean-Brown, the first woman to be the pastor of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Detroit. She’s currently working on her doctoral dissertation titled, β€œthe African American Episcopal Women Priest Project.” The talk will be held at Love’s Jazz & Arts Center from 5 to 7 p.m.

Feb 26:

The Church of the Resurrection is hosting a Community Table Talk at 5:30p.m. The talk is designed to bring those of different races, genders, faith and social status the opportunity to talk about issues. There will also be a soup supper available.

Feb 28:Β 

Omaha Community Playhouse will show β€œElla,” the story of jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald, beginning Feb. 28 and running through March 30. Tickets are $40 for adults and $24 for students. For more information and showtimes, contact the Playhouse at 402-553-0800.

The Rose Theater will show β€œJackie and Me,” a play about Jackie Robinson, beginning Feb. 28 and running through March 16. Tickets are $18. For more information and showtimes, contact the theater at 402-345-4849.
