Construction of new women’s practice facility starts in April

Construction of a $4.5 million, 16,000-square foot women’s practice facility will get underway in early April on the corner of Florence Boulevard and Webster Plaza.

The new women’s practice facility will contain enough space for two full-sized volleyball or basketball courts and is designed to support the schedules and successes of the women’s volleyball and basketball programs according to Steve Brace, associate athletic director.

β€œPlayers want to come to a place where they are going to feel there is a commitment. I think it demonstrates a commitment that Creighton has for volleyball and women’s basketball,” said Kristen Booth, head coach of the women’s volleyball team.Β

Court time has been an issue for these two teams because they share D.J. Sokol Arena for practices and games. Currently, the two teams either practice in D.J. Sokol or the Championship Center where they also have to schedule around the men’s basketball team.

β€œIt’ll give us the option to have a place to shoot and practice on our own time instead of having to compare schedules with men’s basketball and volleyball,” said Jaylyn Agnew, redshirt sophomore on the women’s basketball team. β€œWe used to have to wait until later at night or even postpone things on certain days due to gym availability but now we won’t have to do that which will be awesome for our schedule.”

Volleyball is coming off their best season in history being ranked 9th nationally and hosting the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The women’s basketball team made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year and extended its postseason streak to 11 consecutive seasons. Β

β€œIt’s pretty cool when a recruit walks in and they’ve visited Big Ten or Big Twelve schools and they walk into our facilities and they are oohing and awing. That’s a great testament to what we have been building here,” said Booth. β€œHopefully it will continue to move us forward and help us take even greater steps in the future.”
